The Murphy Bed is a tried and true space saver and they look great in the raised and lower position.
Our fold away beds are extremely popular because they can double your room space and look good doing it. The Furniture in the Raw Murphy Bed is a cinch to open and close. You can lift this bed bed with one finger. The design uses a hydraulic piston system to provide strong, generous support when raising and lowering the fold out bed.

History of the Murphy Bed
The Murphy bed is named for William Lawrence Murphy (1876–1959). Murphy applied for his first patents for a fold away bed around 1900.
What inspired Murphy to design the bed? According to legend, he was wooing an opera singer, but living in a one-room apartment in San Francisco, and the moral code of the time frowned upon a woman entering a man’s bedroom.
So Murphy invented the fold out bed and converted his bedroom into a parlor, enabling him to entertain guests without breaking the moral code of the day.
Sears had introduced foldup beds through the Sears, Roebuck & Co. catalog, but Murphy introduced pivot and counterbalanced designs for which he received a series of patents, including one for a “Disappearing Bed”. Murphy’s design made the bed simple and safe to use.
Murphy beds are used for space-saving purposes, much like trundle beds, and are popular where floor space is limited, such as small homes, apartments, hotels, mobile homes and college dormitories. In recent years, these fold up beds have included options such as lighting, storage cabinets, and office components.
Murphy’s patent has since expired. In 1989, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled that the term “Murphy Bed” had entered common usage and was no longer eligible for protection.

Customer service above and beyond–that is what you can expect if Derrick and Ramonz deliver and set up your purchase from Furniture in the Raw. They called ahead, arrived on time, and introduced themselves as they carefully protected our floor and walls. They competently installed our new Murphy bed. When an issue arose about installing the bookcases, they called their manager and came to an acceptable conclusion. These men were polite, cleaned up their mess, and thanked us for our business. I purchased a floor model murphy bed and assembled it myself…I contacted Leo after having some problems and he didn’t hesitate to send Ray Simmons and Ford Grace to my home near San Antonio. Ray and Ford were professional, courteous, and very knowledgable about the bed. They identified and solved the problem quickly. They tested and retested the bed to ensure it worked properly. They not only showed me how the bed should work and explained the parts, but they allowed me to practice so I could see and understand exactly how my bed should work!

I have nothing to say but good things about Furniture in the Raw. Carter sold me my Murphy bed. He came to my house and prepared the space. He also went out of his way to help me sell my old bed.
When the installers, Ford and Tony, came, they quickly installed the bed. They then helped me move some other furniture that I needed moved. Carter then came back to put on the finishing touches. Everyone I dealt with went out of their way. I highly recommend them.

Had shopped with Furniture in the Raw years ago and was very pleased. We recently moved back to the area and decided to try them again. We were looking for a way to use a 3rd bedroom as an office but keep as a guest room as well. They had the perfect thing. Our salesman Steve was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable about the construction, wood types, quality, options etc. He even advised me against something that I wanted to do offering a very logical reason as to why my idea was flawed. Acouple of the other places that we shopped we asked what pieces were made out of and THEY DID NOT KNOW! We had had isssues in the past with furniture made of particle board and we knew we didn’t want any more of that. Long story short, we custom ordered a murphy bed/office set up built to our specs for our spare bedroom. We were told it would take 3 to 4 weeks to build and a few more weeks to finish, They called us when it was ready(on time), set up a delivery date for later in the week, brought it out, set it up, and we love it. We were very pleased with the entire transaction from service to quality to price to friendliness, knowledge, and helpfulness of the staff. I can tell you that we shopped very hard as this was a large purchase. Furniture in the Raw was not always the cheapest but the quality for the dollar we spent was far above others that we had checked out. We will be back!!
